According to the company, a spin-off from the Tübingen immunology research group led by Hans-Georg Rammensee, the two partners aim to develop novel standardized cancer vaccines. The collaboration focuses on a viral vector platform (ORFV) based on the Orf virus.

Prime Vector Technologies stated that Boehringer Ingelheim intends to integrate the platform into its oncology portfolio and plans to use the viral vector technology in combination therapies as well. Germany’s largest pharmaceutical company is currently conducting 19 clinical studies in oncology.

Ralf Amann, CEO of Prime Vector Technologies, said that ORFV was developed as a versatile viral vector platform and is suitable for both preventive and therapeutic vaccine approaches because of its biological characteristics. In infectious disease research, the platform has already progressed to Phase I/IIa clinical trials, demonstrating its technological maturity.

The development of therapeutic cancer vaccines—designed to treat rather than prevent cancer—is an area of intensive research worldwide. In addition to mRNA-based technologies, approaches under investigation include viral vectors, peptide- and protein-based platforms, and cell-based therapies. The clinical landscape remains complex, with the first approvals of mRNA-based cancer vaccines expected within the next three years.
